Myrtle Reservoir Meeting: Tonight! (UPDATED 5/1)

UPDATE: Parks project manager Virginia Hassinger has just informed me that Parks Superintendent Tim Gallagher has decided not to pursue funding for a skate feature in this park.   This information directly contradicts what was told to me two days ago, but see my comment below about how quickly things can change with Seattle Parks.

Personally I am unclear as to how much rug pulling and shell gaming Seattle skateboarders are expected to endure.  Please turn out to the meeting to express your disappointment in this recent development.

This sets back any possibility of a West Seattle skatepark in the near future as both Ercolini and Myrtle have now both been shut down by the Parks Department, despite strong community support for a skate feature in both parks.

There’s an important meeting regarding the Myrtle Reservoir skatepark tomorrow (Thursday) night.

Seattle Parks has approved a final schematic that includes a skatepark feature in the Northeast corner of the site. It’s a little more set back from the street than it was in the previous design, and looks like it may be a little smaller (around 10K sq ft).

The good news is that the Parks Department vetted the design through the design commission and that this seems to be the final draft…although both Ballard and Lower Woodland designs were both altered after they were “final”.

The bad news is that there is currently no funding allocated for the skate features. However, Parks is actively working with skatepark advocates and the SPAC to find funding, so the intent is there. Experience has shown that the funding piece, while not an insignificant hurdle, is often much easier once you have an approved site.

It’s really important that skatepark supporters show up to this meeting, to demonstrate support for the skatepark feature. It shows the community that an active group of stewards are in the community and willing to help make the skatepark feature a successful and positive addition to the neighborhood.

Please attend!
