FAQ
Q: How do I get a skatepark built in my Seattle neighborhood?
A: The honest answer to this question is no one really knows because it hasn’t actually happened yet outside of Ballard, which was in every way possible, a special case scenario. A good starting place is the Seattle Skatepark Advocacy Guide, which contains step-by-step instructions for getting a skatepark built in your neighborhood.
Q: How many skateparks does Seattle currently have?
A: Largely due to the significant effort by Seattle’s skateboarding community, Seattle now has 2 skateparks, with two more to be built in 2009. However, Seattle has an extensive parks system but is way behind the curve on building skatepars for it’s citizens. In fact, the City of Seattle tore down two skateparks between 2005-2007.
Q: How many skateboarders are in Seattle?
A: This data is difficult to nail down but the best information we’ve seen is from the Superstudy of Sports Participation Geographic Supplement (2002-2004), conducted by American Sports Data Inc. This study gives a regional participation rate of 5.2 percent – that if applied to the total Seattle population, gives a geographically based number of 29,295.
Q: What is the purpose of this website?
A: Seattleskateparks.org is a central clearinghouse for information pertaining to skatepark advocacy in Seattle.
Q: Who runs this website?
A: this website is paid for and run by volunteer skatepark advocate, Matthew Lee Johnston.
